The spirit

Ενδιαφέρουσα προσπάθεια φαίνεται η ταινία του Frank Miller με τίτλο The spirit, βασισμένη στα ομόνυμα θρυλικά κόμικς του Will Eisner. Στην ιστορική αξία του κόμικ έρχεται να προστεθεί η λάμψη μερικών χολυγουντιανών αστεριών όπως οι Scarlett Johansson και Eva Mendes.

The Spirit was a comic strip written by Will Eisner in the 40's and early 50's. The stories were all seven pages long, had a lot of color and the slogan Action, Mystery, Adventure. The Spirit was way ahead of it's time, the only other comicbook writers of that era that even came close to Eisners genius was Carl Barks and Floyd Gottfredson.

In The Spirit Eisner experimented with the comic book medium. Telling short and great stories of various kind. Film-Noir, Science Fiction, Action, Mystery, Adventure etc. Pushing the medium to it's limits. It also had a wide variety of female characters that was one of the Spirits greatest weaknesses.

Frank Millers Sin City is a totally different animal. The Spirits stories are set in Central City, a town ment to be any larger city in America. Basin City, the story of Sin City, is the grittiest, most corrupt and run down city in the United States with hookers, corrupt politicians and an all powerful mafia. The men are "tough guys" or perverted psychos and the women are most of the time dressed in next to nothing.

I've got nothing against Sin City. I like those stories. Like Roger Ebert said: It's Film-Noir, taken to the extreme.  But The Spirit is not Film-Noir taken to the extreme. And judging by the trailer that is what Frank Miller does. He doesn't make Will Eisner's The Spirit. He's making Frank Millers Sin City starring The Spirit.
